Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving
Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go
But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving
I do not count the time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
And I am not alone while my love is near me
I know it will be so until it's time to go
So come the storms of winter and then the birds in spring again
I have no fear of time
For who knows how my love grows?
And who knows where the time goes
By Sandy Denny
For my birthday my boyfriend gave me the Sandy Denny boxset 'boxful of treasures'. (He must have got the message when I would go and stare at it for hours in HMV longingly!)
I adore Sandy Denny, her voice is spellbinding, her words are beautiful and the fact that she has never been fully appreciated is heartbreaking. She is highly respected amongst her contemporaries and has always had an underground following but she never gets any radio play and has never been accepted into the mainstream, a little like Nick Drake. I'm certain one day she will have her day, it's just unfortunate that her untimely death in 1978 will see that she will never witness it herself. If her work has passed you by I implore you to seek her out. Her voice holds such depth that it touches the bottom of the ocean. As a primer I'd recommend the songs 'The Banks of the Nile', 'A Sailor's life', 'Bushes and Briars' and the above 'Who know's where the time goes.' I'm just off to buy my friend a Fairport Convention album featuring Sandy for his birthday, doing my bit to spread the word!

There is surely no better "folk song" than this... Well, maybe Dylan, but this song wipes me out every time. I learned it first from a female friend who was going to do the "folk circuit" with me. (She pulled out on opening night and I went on alone!) When I finally heard the record it instantly became a favourite. I have 2 versions by Sandy. The Fairport original, and another that was discovered and released after she died. (I think it was from a private tape she'd recorded or something). Beautiful song. And how true the words.

Ian,
Yey! A fellow folky! Wow and you did the folk circuit, cool!
'Who know's...' certainly should be in the top ten folk songs of all time. I have an early version on the 'Sandy Denny and the Strawbs'album, it's more naive but just as beautiful. Her early stuff is my favourite at the moment, she has such a way with traditional songs, it blows me away every time I listen.
