Not a great start to the week so far, the weather has been awful and I've been walking around like I still have the coathanger in my coat for days, I over did the digging on the allotment at the weekend and have hurt my back, my collegue is off work with pneumonia which somewhat over shadows my complaints, so I've just had to put up with it. On a brighter note the party I've been organizing is finally coming together, I have a venue at last so I can now relax a little and the invites went out last night. There is something so satisfying about posting invites, off they go all over the country, bringing their recipiants back here, together again.
I've knicked the following off Anne-Maries blog (thanks Anne-Marie), I've changed the answers obviously, thought it looked fun.

7 Things I want to do before I die.
1.) Have a hot air balloon ride.
2.) Learn how to play the Guitar and/or Drums.
3.)Go to Mexico. (This is due to a dream I had a few years ago where I was stood, looking up into the sky, waiting for an answer, when the answer came out of the sky, 'Go to Mexico' I realised I didn't know the question, always thought if I did go to Mexico it would become apparent, a touch Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy I think.)
4.)Gain forfilling and creative employment.
5.)Move to the countryside.
6.) Join a folk band called 'Maris Piper'. (Maris Piper for those who don't know is a variety of potato, I've always thought it makes a smashing name for a folk band, just need to convince others of this!)
7.) Learn a dying craft/skill.

7 things I cannot do
1.) Drive.
2.) Play an instrument (properly.)
3.) Public speaking. (I've managed to avoid this for 27 years, pretty good going if you ask me)
4.) Lie. (This posed a problem when my friends 30th party was going to be a surprise I could barely speak to her for fear she'd mention her birthday, it worked out much easier to tell her of our plans in the end.)
5.) Play sports that involve a racket. (I have awful spacial awareness and always look such a fool trying to hit a ball with a racket/bat, best avoided)
6.) Get a mortgage.
7.) Touch my toes (need to start yoga, I'm slowly seizing up altogether)

7 things I admire in others
1.) An ability to make people laugh.
2.) Good taste (in music/books/films etc.)
3.) Nice Hair. (Just because I have such shit hair, thank god for GHDs)
4.) Confidence.
5.) Artistic/ creative abilities.
6.) Get up and Go.
7.) Selflessness.

7 things I most often say
1.) "Yeah, no." (someone pointed out that I say this alot and ever since I've realised just how much, very annoying)
2.) "Have you got your library card" (this is one of the things I have to say about 50 times a day at work and it drives me mad.)
3.) Okey-doke (this also annoys the hell out of me)
4.) Hiya
5.) Seeya
6.) Ooohya (the leicester accent is horrid, lots of yas, ooohya would usually be finished with either bleeder, or if you are particularly surprised fucker, an example would be if someone said to you " My mum's won £250 worth of Bob the Builder toys (as my friend did today) you would reply "ooohya fucka!")
7.) Mick...Mick...Mick..MickMickMickMickMickMickMick

7 books I love
1.) Billy Liar- Keith Waterhouse (this book has the added dimension of having really good memories of the time I read it, it was read in a field whilst camping, also love the film, if I see the film or the book I get a warm feeling inside almost as warm as the sun in that field in Birchover.)
2.) Wind in The Willows- Kennethe Grahame (find me sat by the river reading this, in heaven)
3.) Dear Boy- Tony Fletcher (the best biography I've ever read)
4.) Watership Down-Richard Adams (can't believe I only read this for the first time last year)
5.) Each Peach Pear Plum-Alan and Janet Alberg (a childhood favourite, I know off by heart, though this isn't difficult as it's very short.)
6.) Man and His Symbols- Carl Jung (actually still reading this, taking it in slowly, fascinating stuff that makes perfect sense to me.)
7.) In Vogue- Georgina Howell ( a book I bought last week with some fabulous pictures from Vogue magazine from the 20's to the 70's.)

7 Movies I have watched again and again
1.) The L-Shaped Room (never fails to make me sob)
2.) Georgy Girl.
3.) Whistle Down The Wind.
4.) The Kids are alright.
5.) Billy Liar.
6.) How to steal a million. (perfect Sunday afternoon viewing)
7.) Star Wars.

7 Favourite Albums
1.) Leige and Leif- Fairport Convention (must be my most listened to album.)
2.) Village Green Preservation Society - The Kinks
3.) Another Diamond Day - Vashti Bunyan
4.) Tommy - The Who (although it was a toss up between this and Sell-Out.)
5.) The Great Destroyer - Low
6.) Espers-Espers
7.) Agaetis Byrjun- Sigur Ros (once experienced what it's like being born to this album, no kidding!)

Eeek I've got carried away again, better get home. Bye!

I just LOVE that Village Green album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, what are GHDs? I need some of those. My hair is utter crap.

Speaking of which, I now have to do something about my awful hair. Gawrgh!

I wanted to ask what GHDs are too. I didn't know Billy Liar was a movie- I vaguely remember a British tv series- and I will look for it.

Great list, my dear! And yes, no! to yoga. It's wonderfully restorative to the body and spirit. And Mexico is beautiful, and so diverse.

Cheers,

Badaboom...maybe, before you die, steal a million, hire a driver, buy that house in the country, own the air balloon, float to Mexico, assemble Maris Piper.

I'd name a band "the tropists", or even a softball team.

Ing has great ideas for what's good for the hair, too, by the way. Don't let her fool you.

On the back, a warm bath, no sudden moves, a massage (easy), chocolate, tea, and pillows.

Anne-Marie & Ing,
GHD's are ceramic straighteners, I finally invested in some last year and didn't regret it, they probably, in the long run, do more damage to your hair and admitedly I can only be bothered to use them these days if I'm going out because it takes a good half hour to sort out my mop but they make your hair soft and sleek, which is amazing in comparison to my naturally wirey, dry hair. GHD stands for good hair day which fortunately I can now occassional have,oh dear I sound like a bloody advert!
Ing,
Yeay! The Kinks are fab, they were the soundtrack to my teenage years but I only ever had best of's so now I'm enjoying discovering all the albums and they're all top quality, not a bad song. I also just discovered 'Arthur Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire', which is great,'Shangra-la' is one of my all time favourite songs ever.
Anne-Marie,
Oh what a treat you have in store if you've never seen Billy Liar, it's super, Tom Courtney and Julie Christie will make you smile for days!
Gina,
I love your plan, the only trouble is the inability to lie conflicts a little with the stealing a million, I'd have to turn myself in. But yeah, floating to Mexico in a hot air balloon sounds perfect and when I get Maris Piper together we could go on tour with The Tropists. Brilliant, that my life sorted!

Hello Moonpie,

I quit the day after my birthday...after a severe bender, but I decided that I'd try to quit before then. 25 seems like a good age to pack it in.

The birthday bash was debauched.

I know about lurkers because I have a stat counter installed (which I use for my other two websites too, www.myspace.com/tommatchett and www.thechange.org.uk)...they're free, and all you do is create an account, cut and paste the code into your site and you can find out who, when and where your site was viewed. It makes for fascinating reading (and is really helpful if someone anonymous leaves a nasty message).

Hey, I noticed that you like a lot of the same things as me. I'm M.C at the 2006 Who Convention in Bush Hall on April 1st, are you coming?

I've also studied 60s counter-culture as part of my Masters thesis on Gustav Metzger. I love Village Green Preservation Society...genius album, and Farenheit 451 is a great book and film (partly borrowed from for Pete's idea of Lifehouse).

Hope that I hear from you again. Are you a Londoner too?

Tom.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the info on stat counter, the marvels of modern technology eh!
Yes I am coming to The Who Convention, which is very exciting, don't really know what to expect as I've never been before. Think I've seen one of the cover bands before and they were really good, remember after the show talking to the singer and in my drunken haze actually believing he was Roger Daltry! I'll keep an eye out for you on stage.
No, I'm not a Londoner, I live in lovely Leicester, being sarcastic about the lovely bit by the way.
Good luck with the stopping smoking, honestly it's all worth it in the end!
Hi Bonfire Jones,
I'll check out your IAC entry as soon as I get on a computer with sound, good luck with it.

Maybe I should do some lists. Nah, I'll just keep snooping 'round reading everyone else's. Something to do whilst it's so bloody cold and dark. (And here was me thinking March had arrived). Okay which things off your list would I share?

"Before I Die":
3: I'd swop Memphis for Mexico, but I know I'll never get 'round to it. (Some things are better as dreams).
5: Not sure I could actually move back to the country. It's kind of claustrophobic in a wide open spaces kind of way.
6: I was once in a Folk Band called "Syd's Glass Bed". We split up before the first gig, so I went on as a solo. (The hall then only paid m half the fee!)
7: Difficult. I think most skills amd craftys are dying...

"Things I Cannot Do"
4: I can't lie either. I can't play cards for this reason. Everyone always knows what I've got.
5: I can't play ANY sports. Which is more than okay with me!
7: But I CAN touch my toes. (Strange really, 'cos I was told in 1977 I had spondilitis. Don't listen to men in white coats).

"Things I admire"
6: Agreed. I'm a terrible get up and goer.
7: Agreed. Can't stand people who don't give back in kind for what they get.

"Things I most Often Say"
7: The guy who used to live next door was called Ian. Sometimes on a Sunday morning she used to keep calling out for me, real desperate like. I never answered her. I didn't think I knew her well enough to be on first name turns.

"Books"
Not read any of those. I seem to be reading nothing but music boigraphies at present. Not good. Need to feed the brain more.

"Movies"
2, 3, and 5 certainly have a real magical quality. If you loike a film with this "sixties Britain" kind of edge then I highly recommend the cinema version of "Up the Junction". This I do watch again and again and again....

"Favourite albums"
2: Yes, let's hear it for the Kinks. I love all their sixties / seventies albums. "Aurthur" is as good as "Village Green" I reckon.

Hope the back's feeling better.
Cheers.

Hiya Ian,
If you like music biographies I would definately read 'Dear boy' the Keith Moon biography, it's a very good read. I like music biogs too, recommend any good ones? I just got 'Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donavan but haven't started reading it yet.
I'm a big fan of British sixties films, I haven't yet seen 'Up the Junction'(the colour version)though, that's one I've got to look forward to.
I hadn't realised #7 on the 'most often said' sounded like that, it was my nagging and his ignoring I was getting at, but your interpretation made me laugh (and blush a little.)
The back is slowly recovering, it kept me from the allotment this weekend though, which is a drag, thanks for asking!
