Had quite an uneventful weekend, nothing to write home about. Discovered the Sonic Youth version of the Carpenters song 'Superstar' and can not stop playing it. It's that line, 'baby baby baby baby oh baby' it's got to be one of the most unimaginative lyrics ever written, but it's just brilliant, it's such a great pay-off, I can't get enough of it. Also watched a great, but awful sixties film called 'Candy', it has a really bad and extremely dated, sexist storyline but there are some fantastic actors in it, Walter Matthau, James Coburn and Marlon Brando to name but a few and there are some really funny scenes. It's worth it just for Ringo Starr's cameo as a Mexican with a strange stilted liverpudlian accent. If you're a fan of psychedelic sixties silliness then you'll love it, if not avoid it like the plague! Also watched 'Withnail and I' which is just pure genius, for years I claimed to not like this film, I tryed to watch it too many times with annoying people who would quote it all the way through as you were watching and in my irritation failed to see why everbody thought it was so amazing, but now I get it, it still bugs the hell out of me when people quote it but it does have some fantastic lines;
"Look at that. Look at that. "Accident Blackspot"? These aren't accidents. They're throwing themselves into the road gladly. Throwing themselves into the road to escape all this hideousness. [to a pedestrian] Throw yourself into the road, darling - you haven't got a chance."
"We've gone on holiday by mistake."
" We want the finest wines available to humanity, and we want them here, and we want them now."
Arhhggg! Now I'm doing it, there is no escaping quoting that bloody film.
There is a pervading sadness today. My two best friends, who are sisters, lost there grandpa last night. He'd been in hospital for a week and it was doubtful whiether he would be going home, it was old age that got him in the end and I think it was a decision he made himself, I think this can be the way in old age. He had led a long and happy life and he was a good man, a good husband, father and grandfather. He lost his wife about 6/7 years ago and today I can't help but think they are reunited, at times like this my cynical side gives way to my emotional side and things like this seem possible. One thing I would like to say about Len, he had a wonderful dry sense of humour, he didn't say much but when he did it would be so spot on, so sharp. He was a very likeable person and he'll be missed by all but especially by his grandchildren and by his drinking partner whom he met everyday for a pint. Rest in Peace Len Brown may you and Jean be together again and may there be a seat in god's own pub specially reserved for you.
I'd better be going home before it gets dark, until next time...

FUN-ny! And Ringo appearing in cameo (he used to play a lot of those kinds of roles, even one for Frank Zappa) is always classic. Instant classic.

Sorry about your friends losing their grandpa. Not sure what to say except, yes, to him.

It's always good to see Keith Moon in cameo roles too, he steals the scene everytime.
Yes, to Len.
Cheers.

Hi Moonpie,
That's a lovely tribute to Len. To him indeed.

Whitnail is on my to-watch list. I just keep forgetting it's on it.

Cheers,
AM

You were wanting gigs in France, no?

Who News pages announce three gigs in France.

You might need to register online to access the Who News site, from Pete's site. Anywho, I hope I'm the first to inform you.

Thanks Anne-Marie,
Yeah definately watch 'Withnail and I' if you get a chance, it is a classic, try not to watch with someone who has seen it before though cause you won't hear it for the quoting!
Gina,
Brilliant thanks. I have no idea where they are though, will have to consult my friend who lives there, my geography teacher was so bad even though I was paying attention in her lessons I still didn't learn anything!

OMG, Moonpie,
Do you know, I was 7 years old when I saw CANDY. Yup, my parents took me to a drive-in movie theatre. They thought they had me asleep in the back of the station wagon (babysitter must have cancelled last minute). But, I was peeking, oh yes I was. I was so devasted when "Gomez Adams" (JOHN ASTIN) and Ringo Starr were doing such "naughty" things. I also, remember some woman's silly looking "tushie", (as I called it, in those days) Sheesh, talk about parental supervision!!! LOL

Lzygrl,
My parents were somewhat slack at the supervision thing too, as far as films were concerned anyway. I remember watching 'The Shining' then going to a birthday party at McDonalds, so I must have been only about ten. Needless to say it scared the living daylights out of me, I loved it though and I'm still rather partial to a scary movie, so couldn't have done me any harm.
I was a little shocked at Ringo too! :)
