I'm having one of those 'everything is great' days. As so far as there are just so many great things in the world! For christmas I had some great CDs, a very folky theme running through them. I love folk music. I got a Bert Jansch CD, which is fab, (you can't beat a bit of Bert!) , Nico's album 'Chelsea Girl' which is very folky and the new Espers album 'Weed tree' which is an album of covers and traditional songs. My favourite song on it is 'Black is the Colour' which I've just discovered is a traditional Irish folksong. It has the most beautiful lyrics, you can't get more romantic than this;
Black is the colour of my true love's hair.
His face is like some wondrous spell,
The prettiest face and the neatest hands,
I love the ground whereon he stands.
I love my love and well he knows
I love the ground whereon he goes
If you no more on earth I see,
I can't serve you as you have me.
The winter's passed and the leaves are green
The time is passed that we have seen,
But still I hope the time will come
When you and I shall be as one.
I go to the Clyde for to mourn and weep,
But satisfied I never could sleep,
I'll write to you a few short lines
I'll suffer death ten thousand times.
So fare you well, my own true love
The time has passed, but I wish you well.
But still I hope the time will come
When you and I will be as one.
I love my love and well he knows
I love the ground whereon he goes,
The prettiest face, the neatest hands
I love the ground whereon he stands.
Flipping beautiful! I also got a video of a documentery about Fairport convention. Unfortunately it was mainly footage of 80's gigs, by which time they were a completely different band to the one they were in the late 60's early 70's when Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson were in them. There was one bit of footage of Sandy Denny, but it was really bad quality and it was from the period when she rejoined them in the 70's. I've wanted to see her in action for years and I really hope there is some better footage of her somewhere, she's a legend, it's terrible if there isn't any, very sad. There is some great clips of Richard Thompson though and a TV appearence from the 60's with Judy Dyble.
I also want to say how fucking excellant the 'Brian Jonestown Massacre' are. Awful name I know, I prefer to refer to them as BJM! They are sooooo rock and roll. There is a film about them called 'Dig' which is absolutely hilarious. More about them later but if you get the opportunity watch the film or have a listen to them, you won't be disapointed.
I watched the Ronnie Lane documentary on the BBC last night and he has become a new hero of mine. I can't even begin to explain what a lovely brilliant talented man he was. His story is just great and I love the concept of 'The Passing Show'. What an absolute star! I'm hurrying now as I've got to go and get my Korunys or what ever they are called for my trip to Prague. Would like to elaborate more on the documentary but there is no time, maybe later.
Anyway what a wonderful world we live in, so much good stuff, tommorow I'll probably be complaining again but for today anyway, it's all great.
