Okay, I know this is really sad but I'm so darn proud of my seedlings that I had to post a picture. Nuturing my seedlings (or as I've started calling them 'my little darlings' actually make that 'dwarlings') has opened up a motherly instinct in me that I never even knew existed. Short of giving them all names I have become very attached to say the least. At the moment they are all outside my flat so I'm not sure how I'll cope when it's time for them to move on to the allotment, fly the nest as it were.
I've been using a moon calendar to plan sowing and planting times and so far it seems to be very successful. They appear very healthy and strong but I am beggining to understand the gravity of all the potential threats, so many pests and diseases to guard them from. I've been warned of rot, blight, spot, scab and mould not to mention mites, flys, grubs, weevils, slugs and snails and I'm begining to wonder if I'm cut out for the heartbreak of organic gardening but using chemicals would defeat the whole object so I've got to rely on moon energy and a whole lot of love. Just hope I can bring myself to eat them when the time comes!

Hi Moonpie,
I love the picture of your little darlings. Is my chutney growing anywhere in there? ;)

As for your question, yes, we have an itinerary- we're flying overnight to London on July 7th, and will go on to Berlin on the 11th to catch the Who (on the 12th). I was going to post something about our plans closer to the departure date and maybe suggest a blogger lunch or something sometime that weekend. Where are you in England? Anywhere close to London?

And yes, getting excited, but still lots of school things to do so no time to worry too much.

Cheers,

Holy seedlings Moonpie!

I'm getting to know some window boxes on my balcony. Some plantings are returning, some not. I'm thinking herbs and tomatoes and anything for salsa, really, or pasta.

Taragon though, in curry or in rice is so darn yummy. there's a pudding, too, I think. It's been such a long while since I've opened a cook book! One day soon, in a kitchen near me, a dish with fresh herbs.

to gardens, ladies, to gardens!

Anne-Marie,
Yes you are looking at what will hopefully produce the ingredients of your chutney (you too Gina), if I can keep them safe from harm that is. With any luck it'll be ready for July then possibly you'll be able to receive it in person. London isn't far at all on the train, a long way on my bicycle though. Will you be visiting Brighton again? I still haven't made it up there this year but really want to in the summer some time.
Gina,
Mmm fresh herbs! I will have to experiment with taragon never really used it much before, aside from a creamy chicken and taragon dish we used to cook when I worked in a kitchen. I can see how it would lend itself well to a pudding, the smell always reminds me of biscuits. My corriander seeds sprouted their first shoots today, which is exciting, corriander smells so good as does basil, my favourite smells in fact. It's great your new place has somewhere for growing. Chilli pepers are a good one too, for your salsa.
Best go, we have some new little duckling friends, they're getting through our bread faster than us and I can hear them squeaking for more.

Nothing sad about that! It is wonderful to be able to make things grow - and nothing nicer than eating the things you've grown yourself!

Funny coincidences about those photos. Hope your message-in-a-bottle goes faraway and is found by someone. You should actually include an email address or something so whoever finds it can contact you :)

Thanks for the Neil Young link, I'll have to check it out. The Low album I found in the library is called "Things We Lost In the Fire". Alas, I've not got around to listening to it yet.

Ah Moonpie,
my hubby had a little vegetable garden when we first moved to our home. i don't know why he gave it up? maybe we were producing more than we could eat, and well, now there just isn't room...the dog took over the yard!
i wish you and your seedlings well......

Hi Moonpie,
I haven't thought of going to Brighton on this trip, but you never know. :)
I would love to meet up with you, though, and will be in touch before we leave.

Don't worry about the chutney- I'm sure it'll hold until August and travel safely. :)

'Things we lost in the Fire' is a mavelous album. in fact you jsut prompted me to put it on. My message in a bottle is all ready to go.I'm just waiting for the river to pick up some speed before I let it go, it's been very still these last few days due to the lovely weather we've been having, I'm sure this won't last for long though!

Thanks for the well wishes for my seedlings they certainly need it!
