I posted these pictures cause I think they are wonderful photographs. This one actually appeared in Vogue in the 1930's, so it's incredibly a head of it's time. The one I posted yesterday is of course the beautiful Jean Shrimpton (I like the anti-car stance, if I had even half the good looks of good old Jean I'd travel to work in the same manner, instead of cowering in the guttering on my bike!) One thing I did notice looking at these and more photos from Vogue from the 1920-1960's is that the women in them have such a strong image, amazing strength of personality comes across in the photos that you don't seem to get these days. I think that nowadays women are expected to look just how men want them to but are tricked into believing it's there own desision, though the media. We are just as repressed as we've always been only we are fooled into thinking otherwise, the intuitive, powerful nature of women is no longer nutured. Women are so obsessed with self image, (enough to have plastic surgery for christ sake) that they miss the point half the time! This has reminded me of one of my favourite jokes (it's only a favourite cause it's one I can actually remember.)
Q. Why do women wear make-up and perfume?
A. Because they are ugly and they smell.
That doesn't actually help my point but it's quite funny.

I love this photo. I disagree that images of this sort were ahead of their time. I think it's truer to say we've fallen well behind the standards they set. It looks very much like German Expressionist cinema of the 20's.

Yeah I totally agree, I just thought when I first saw it that it was from the sixties and was surprised to find out how early was. I've never seen any German Expressionist cinema, sounds great.
